people's party pt4: common people

"Common People" was released as a single in 1995, reaching number two on the UK singles chart. It also appears on the band's 1995 album Different Class.
The inspiration for the song came from a Greek fellow student Jarvis Cocker knew at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. A BBC THREE documentary failed to correctly locate the woman, whom Cocker stated could have been on any fine art course but that "sculpture" sounded better. Cocker felt that 'slumming' was becoming a dominant theme in popular culture and this contributed to the singles' rushed release. Cocker said "it seemed to be in the air, that kind of patronising social voyeurism...”

The accompanying video featured an early appearance from actress Sadie Frost and a dance routine improvised by Cocker on the day of shooting. The video also features a homage to the Eleanor Rigby sequence in the film Yellow Submarine (with everyday people stuck in repeating loops lasting less than a second).

people's party pt4: shiny happy people

"Shiny Happy People" appeared on R.E.M.’s 1991 album Out of Time and was released as a single in the same year. It was the first and only R.E.M. song to reach the top ten in the UK as well as in the USA. Although a top ten hit, it was excluded from the band's 2003 'Best Of' album In Time; this was reportedly a deliberate decision by Michael Stipe, who once mentioned his dislike of the song in an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The song is supposedly an ironic reference to a piece of roughly translated Chinese propaganda; and the massacre in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, two years before the song was released. The inference apparently compares the complacent favored insiders of the regime to the idealistic "revolting" unhappy students on the ground in Tiananmen Square. The song appeared in Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 during footage of George H. W. Bush visiting the Saud family.

people's party pt2: people are people

"People Are People" is Depeche Mode's tenth UK single (released on March 12 1984) it was their first hit single in the US and the first single for the Some Great Reward album.Despite "People Are People"'s success, Martin Gore considers it to be one of his least favourite songs. He prefers his songs to have subtle meanings so that people can find their own meanings to it, and feels "People Are People" does not fit that description. It was not played again live after 1988.

people's party pt1: power to the people

"Power to the People" was released on 12 March 1971 and entered the charts on 20 March, 1971, and remained there for nine weeks. The song was written by Lennon in response to an interview he gave to Tariq Ali and Robin Blackburn, published in Red Mole. As Lennon explained, "I just felt inspired by what they said, although a lot of it is gobbledygook. So I wrote 'Power to the People' the same way I wrote 'Give Peace a Chance,' as something for the people to sing. I make singles like broadsheets. It was another quickie, done at Ascot."
It was John Lennon's fourth solo single and it was credited to John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, which on this occasion comprised Lennon, Klaus Voorman, Jim Gordon and Yoko Ono. Extra backing was supplied by Rosetta Hightower and "44 others". Phil Spector assisted with the production.
Lennon's perception of the song changed during the 1970s. He called the song "rather embarrassing" and supported Hunter S. Thompson’s claim that the anthem was "ten years too late." In 1980, he stated that the song "didn't really come off" as it had been "written in the state of being asleep and wanting to be loved by Tariq Ali and his ilk."

dior joaillerie - dead as a dodo

pretty dead: say hello to dior joaillerie's fine jewellery collection of rings and pendants. they come in 10 lovely and surely loving couples of "rois et reignes", of - you clever kids will already have figured this out - kings and queens.
what a dark and morbid approach for the colourful-cartoon-character-loving dior joaillerie designer victoire de castellane. here she tells style.com what's so great about japanese miniature toys and why she prefers her precious creations to look fake (we wonder if the average dior customer agrees).

gothic at the duty free

ever tried ask these nice sales assistants at the duty free shop for black lipstick? "why don't you try this one?", they'd ask, handing you something close to a dark red and add "do you need a lipliner with that?".
those black lipsticks available at afro shops rather make you look like you had eaten blackberries in a hurry and even make-up avantgardist shu uemuera offers green and blue, but no black.
now, over what seems like years since we have started seeing those pretty gothic lips in almost every fashion magazine on the planet, we can go back to using our black eye kohl where we are supposed to (hint: around the eye) because MAC decided to help us out: they're launching "style black", offering shiny and matt kinds of black lipstick, lipgloss but also nail lacquer, eyeshadows, eyeliners and kohl pencils. and as the pr visuals proof, emo boys seem to have become an important new target group for cosmetic brands! only question left: why on earth will the collection only be available this october and november?
oh, and here's the perfect leg attire matching the gothic make-up. recently spotted at pratersauna club in vienna. please give special attention to the black socks and tights worn above the shoes. but these tights had nothing to lose anyway.
